Ska combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and R&B. A precursor to rocksteady and reggae from the late '50s, ska uses a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. Its history is typically divided into three periods or waves: the original Jamaican scene of the '60s; the English 2 Tone ska revival of the late '70s; and the third-wave ska movement of the '80s through the '90s, when ska rose to popularity in the US.
