Well hello, Everyone! How's your #coronalife experience going? Various shades of "I wish this weren't happening." i expect? Neat. How about a little distraction? How about some deep, lumbering basslines to spring clean your mentals? That's the spirit! :D

This... is not a style of music i thought i'd ever make a mix of, mainly because i usually only enjoy it in small doses (with the notable exception of Phaeleh, whose entire discography i will listen to on repeat). But something about the current climate has made the usual excesses of dubstep/trap/etc seem... much less excessive by comparison. The new Phantogram album "Ceremony" that dropped in March also gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas, mainly due to how they managed to combine emotional and melancholy vocals with unexpectedly large amounts of bass (as you'll hear in "Let Me Down"), in ways that reminded me of early dubstep/chillstep. So I went digidigging and after some thinking and experimenting came up with this. The tracks are a little less underground than i normally find myself enjoying or working with, but i was also thinking that a little comforting familiarity might not be entirely out of order right now.

One of the other many thoughts that has bubbled up while sheltering-at-home in a shared space is that, as much as i love headphones (we'll get to that in a second), and as much time as i spend in them outside of the house, when you and your partner/roomate are forced into their constant use, either through necessity or politeness, they lose their lustre somewhat. Taking into account that the Audio-Technicas (ATH-M50x) that i use were originally intended to be my backup headphones, but quickly supplanted my Pioneer HDJ-2000MK2s solely based on how deliciously rich they sound. And even with that being said, recording this entirely inside that (very enjoyably lush) soundspace was a remarkably different experience to working with the usual monitor/booth setup. This is the first mix i've ever recorded that way, and although it still sounds great in the car, it's best experienced in headphones. Which is what most of us are doing these days anyway 🙃

In any case, grab your own best set, kick back, imbibe/inhale your preferred form of chemical relaxation, and enjoy! Feel free to leave comments, share, etc etc, and stay tuned, as more is on the way. Stay safe, stay healthy ❤️
